3-Time All-American (Acrylic)
In 1945, Doak Walker enrolled at Southern Methodist University in early November, playing his first football game on November 3, 1945. The Ponies would be playing that day against the University of Texas and Doak’s best friend from Highland Park, quarterback legend Bobby Layne. UT would go on to win that day in Dallas, with a 12-7 score, but it would be the first glimpse of Doak Walker’s gridiron greatness!
Walker won All-Southwest Conference honors in that shortened freshman season, including being named to play in the East-West Shrine game on January 1, 1946. As the game was played on his 19th birthday, Doak gave the entire nation a glimpse of what was to come starting the following year.
After serving his country during the 1946 season, Doak returned to SMU. The 5-foot-11, 173-pounder then became a 3-Time All-American at SMU, in the years 1947, 1948 and 1949.
He was also the first junior to receive the Heisman Trophy, winning in 1948. He would never finish lower than third in Heisman voting in 1947, 1948, and 1949.
