In 1949, Doak’s last season on the Hilltop, the Ponies hosted Rice in the 3rd game of the season in front of a crowd of 72,000 in Cotton Bowl Stadium. The Ponies ended up losing 41-27 to a great Rice team that went on the win the Southwest Conference. Early in the second half, Doak was knocked out when he was tackled going out of bounds on an end sweep, falling into a wheelchair occupied by a fan. This picture shows Doak coming back from the locker room with an assist from SMU’s Dr. Morgan and Trainer Wayne Rudy.
